Notes: Course Repeatable for Credit. Housing, in New York City during the twentieth century, has been a site of political contestation between renters, homeowners, landlords, realtors, developers, and elected officials at the city, state, and federal level. In this class, we will examine the history of housing from the tenements at the turn of the twentieth century to the luxury high-rises of the present day, including topics such as displacement, segregation, tenant protections, and gentrification. Students will read scholarly sources and primary sources, such as plays, court cases, and speeches, and take trips such as a tour of the Cooper Square land trust, a hearing of the Rent Stabilization Board, and more.
