Notes: Taught by Luise Papcke. This course offers an introduction to the history of modern political thought from the Renaissance to the late 19th century. Through the careful study of primary works, students will retrace and discuss how moral, social, and political ideas change in the modern era, and explore how this affects ideas about freedom, equality, the nature and bounds of politics, and justice. Authors include Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Hegel, Marx, and Nietzsche.
