Immersive Experiences
NYU Abu Dhabi: Core: Cultural Exploration & Analysis
By default, you are a consumer of immersive experiences if you've been to a 3D or IMAX movie; if you've tried a virtual reality headset; if you've listened to music on surround sound speakers; if you've explored an interactive website or visual album; or if you've attended Burning Man or Disneyland. One of the main drivers of culture and technology, immersion is the process by which one or more of the senses become saturated as environmental objects surround, envelope, or come in closer proximity to us. In the 21st century, immersion has become a multi-billion global business. But it is not new. Theorists like Walter Benjamin and Guy Debord have long been concerned with theorizing the sensory aspects of media spectacle. In this class, students will explore the history and culture of immersion and we will investigate how emergent technology has impacted immersion. We especially look at immersion in popular culture - from Satie to Björk; to ambient music and panoramic sound; to theme parks and escape rooms; to haunted houses and holograms. Given Los Angeles' thriving immersive entertainment scene, students can expect to hear from notable guest speakers and to take special field trips.
