Instructor: Ari Melenciano TOPIC: Computational Photography using AI Non-majors must email the department if interested in enrolling for this course, tischphoto@nyu.edu. Similar to the transitions of imagery creation between painting to film and film to digital, photography is embarking on its newest revolution through the use of A.I. Recent developments in AI models have allowed for anyone with access to the internet to create hyper-realistic imagery (and other forms of media like sound and video) through text prompts. What does it now mean for photographers to apply their understanding of composition, lighting, scenery, etc. to the raw medium of large datasets in sculpting for artistic and/or utilitarian purposes? How might this either jeopardize and/or supercharge the value of the human artist? How are artists becoming the new programmers in combining their encyclopedic understanding of the art world, with the code-less format of natural language programming? This course invites students invested in exploring ways of pushing the boundaries of computational visual media with the most emerging A.I. technologies. This course will be conducted as an introduction to creative and ethical uses of A.I., a survey of imagery composition from historical traditional to futuristic experimental styles, and a studio for building your own portfolio of A.I. enabled imagery using the newest research. No understanding of code or A.I. is required.
