Notes: Course Repeatable for Credit. Cities have always been prominent sites of change. They have also always served as projection screen for imaginations of the future. The age of big data and artificial intelligence (AI) is no different: the smart city is presented to us as the new utopia. This course will examine the way in which design, technology and politics intersect at a city level through the lens of the “smart city". It will take a critical view onto the differing and contesting narratives of how we should put together and live our collective urban lives. It looks at the intersection of urban design and technology innovation and explores what is at stake when we emphasise technological over social change, and how this tension has been conceptualised in contemporary social science, STS and design scholarship.
